"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16). This is not a greeting card verse detached from context. It is spoken directly to Nicodemus — the man who will later watch that Son die, who will carry 75 pounds of burial spice to that body. The word "perish" (apollumi) is the opposite of "eternal life" (zoe aionios). Perish is not annihilation — it is permanent loss, the second death, Hades without exit. Eternal life is not merely duration but quality: zoe = the life of God himself, shared. Jesus is planting the seed of the entire Descent-into-Hell doctrine here: he must "perish" (enter death fully) so that those who believe need not. Nicodemus hears these words at night. He will see them executed in afternoon sunlight on a Roman cross five years later.
